Coronavirus & switching broadband

For most, switching is fine as no one needs access to your home – it's sorted remotely. Yet for those switching from cable (eg, Virgin), you'll likely have to wait a little while. This is because most other firms use the BT Openreach network and its engineers are only just starting a phased return of installations after they were put on hold due to social distancing.

When you do switch, you may be down for up to two hours, but in rare cases the outage can be longer if anything goes wrong, so it's worth considering at this time when broadband's so crucial.

Virgin Media broadband deals

Virgin Media stands apart from the other big broadband providers & it operates its own cable network, and specialises in fast or superfast fibre packages. It also offers line rental and a broad range of TV channels.

What does Virgin Media offer?

All of Virgin Media's broadband packages are faster fibre. Most come with line rental as standard, though Virgin's one of the few providers to offer a broadband-only option too. Its TV service is one of the most comprehensive, and you can get a mobile service via Virgin Mobile, which offers both traditional pay monthly and Sim-only deals.

How good is Virgin Media's customer service?

0

It's not too bad. In our Feb 2019 broadband customer service poll, some 41% of 910-odd MoneySavers rated it 'great', versus 27% who said it was 'poor'.

With broadband and home phone, Virgin Media has a fairly low number of complaints per 100,000 customers compared to its major competitors, according to regulator Ofcom's stats. Its performance on TV is less impressive though, with recent figures showing it has the third highest ratio of complaints after BT.

Virgin Media broadband

All Virgin Media's broadband packages are fibre optic & handy if you've a need for speed. There are four main options & all are unlimited so there's no monthly usage cap. It's worth noting Virgin Media does have a traffic management policy, which means you may notice a limit on speeds at peak times & it says this is intended to ensure more consistent service. While most of Virgin Media's broadband packages come with line rental, it does offer broadband-only too. However, it's worth noting this may often work out more expensive, so it may be cheaper to get a line even if you won't use it.

Virgin Media line rental

The standard line rental option from Virgin Media is its Talk Weekends package, which offers inclusive calls to UK landlines and Virgin Mobile numbers at the weekend. There are four further packages to choose from including Talk More Anytime and International. You can also get a discount on its line rental if you opt to pay for a year upfront.

Virgin Media TV

Virgin Media offers a huge amount of choice when it comes to telly and all come with the Virgin TV V6 box. There are four main packages to choose from including the Player, Full House and VIP TV bundles. Once you've chosen your basic package it's possible to mix and match, paying extra to add various channel bundles. Options include Sky Sports, BT Sport, Sky Cinema and Sky Entertainment (though this won't include Sky Atlantic).

Our top need-to-knows

1

Who we do and don't compare

This tool looks at 16 of the biggest providers, including the giants of BT, Sky and Virgin. Plus special deals we've found or blagged that we think are top picks. Yet there are also many small providers we can't list - which occasionally have cheap deals - so it's always worth checking direct with any local provider you know of. Let us know if you find a top deal we've missed and see which providers this tool covers.

2

Switching can save you £100s

Many get a cheap promo deal for broadband, line rent and/or TV, and stick with it when it ends, usually paying £100s/year more than they started with. Don't let it be you - compare now and see if you could save

3

Fast advertised speeds don't mean faster broadband

Providers only have to advertise the average speed received by at least 50% of customers between 8pm and 10pm. Your actual speed can depend on a host of factors - see the full checklist of tips in Broadband Speed Boosting.

4

Consider your need for speed

If it's just you and the dog, you're likely to be fine with standard speeds averaging around 11Mb. If you share a house, or you use the web for movie downloads, streaming or gaming, you may want to opt for faster speeds in excess of 30Mb.

5

Beware of mid-contract switching costs

Usually you'll pay for the rest of the contract plus termination fees. If your provider increases prices mid-contract and didn't warn you before you signed up, you can switch penalty-free within 30 days of notification of the price hike.
