Coronavirus & switching broadband

For most, switching is fine as no one needs access to your home – it's sorted remotely. Yet for those switching from cable (eg, Virgin), you'll likely have to wait a little while. This is because most other firms use the BT Openreach network and its engineers are only just starting a phased return of installations after they were put on hold due to social distancing.

When you do switch, you may be down for up to two hours, but in rare cases the outage can be longer if anything goes wrong, so it's worth considering at this time when broadband's so crucial.

It's one of the UK's big four broadband providers, but TalkTalk's been plagued by customer service issues for a number of years. As it tries to improve its appeal, it regularly has decent promo deals.

What does TalkTalk offer?

TalkTalk has a wide range of packages to choose from. It offers standard-speed and fibre broadband, line rental with a choice of call plans and customisable TV bundles.

How good is TalkTalk's customer service?

Not good. In our Feb 2019 poll on broadband customer service it took the wooden spoon among major providers - just 22% of almost 700 MoneySavers rated it 'great', and 46% 'poor'.

Ofcom stats also show there's serious room for improvement. It was named the most complained about provider for both broadband and home phone, based on complaints per 100,000 customers, and only second in TV after BT.

TalkTalk broadband

TalkTalk has the standard range of broadband packages, all of which come with line rental, including the basic entry level Fast Broadband and Faster Fibre Broadband with a speed boost, its fastest package. TalkTalk's also helping to trial UltraFibreOptic broadband offering lightning-quick speeds of 1,000Mb, but this is currently only available to a few customers.

TalkTalk line rental

You'll need line rental to get any of TalkTalk's broadband packages, but if you want to make calls as well, you can choose to add on one or more of its plans. These include Unlimited UK calls, International Saver and International Max.

TalkTalk TV

TalkTalk's TV offering isn't the most comprehensive, but it is affordable and very flexible. You've two basic options to choose from; its TV Box with the ability to pause and rewind or the TV Plus Box which also comes with six extra Sky entertainment channels, including Sky One and Sky Sports News. You can then customise your TV package by adding certain 'Boosts' which are bundles of channels on a rolling monthly contract. These include Entertainment, TV Select, Kids, Sky Sports and Sky Cinema.

Our top need-to-knows

1

Who we do and don't compare

This tool looks at 16 of the biggest providers, including the giants of BT, Sky and Virgin. Plus special deals we've found or blagged that we think are top picks. Yet there are also many small providers we can't list - which occasionally have cheap deals - so it's always worth checking direct with any local provider you know of. Let us know if you find a top deal we've missed and see which providers this tool covers.

2

Switching can save you £100s

Many get a cheap promo deal for broadband, line rent and/or TV, and stick with it when it ends, usually paying £100s/year more than they started with. Don't let it be you - compare now and see if you could save

3

Fast advertised speeds don't mean faster broadband

Providers only have to advertise the average speed received by at least 50% of customers between 8pm and 10pm. Your actual speed can depend on a host of factors - see the full checklist of tips in Broadband Speed Boosting.

4

Consider your need for speed

If it's just you and the dog, you're likely to be fine with standard speeds averaging around 11Mb. If you share a house, or you use the web for movie downloads, streaming or gaming, you may want to opt for faster speeds in excess of 30Mb.

5

Beware of mid-contract switching costs

Usually you'll pay for the rest of the contract plus termination fees. If your provider increases prices mid-contract and didn't warn you before you signed up, you can switch penalty-free within 30 days of notification of the price hike.
