Virgin Media broadband, phone and TV - what you get

Virgin Media

Virgin Media stands apart from the other big broadband providers – it operates its own cable network, and specialises in fast or superfast fibre packages. It also offers line rental and a broad range of TV channels.

What does Virgin Media offer?

All of Virgin Media's broadband packages are faster fibre. Most come with line rental as standard, though Virgin's one of the few providers to offer a broadband-only option too. Its TV service is one of the most comprehensive, and you can get a mobile service through via Virgin Mobile, which offers both traditional pay monthly and Sim-only deals.

How good is Virgin Media's customer service?

It's decent. In our July 2017 broadband customer service poll, some 37% of 1,400-odd MoneySavers rated it 'great', versus 27% who said it was 'poor'.

With broadband and home phone, Virgin Media has a fairly low number of complaints per 100,000 customers compared to its major competitors, according to regulator Ofcom's stats. Its performance on TV is less impressive though, with recent figures showing it has the second highest ratio of complaints after BT.

Virgin Media broadband

All Virgin Media's broadband packages are fibre optic – handy if you've a need for speed. There are four main options – all are unlimited so there's no monthly usage cap:

  • VIVID 50. With speeds of up to 50Mb.
  • VIVID 100. Up to 100Mb.
  • VIVID 200. Up to 200Mb.
  • VIVID 300. Up to 300Mb.

It's worth noting Virgin Media does have a traffic management policy, which means you may notice a limit on speeds at peak times – it says this is intended to ensure more consistent service.

While most of Virgin Media's broadband packages come with line rental, it does offer broadband-only too. However, it's worth noting this may often work out more expensive, so it may be cheaper to get a line even if you won't use it.

Virgin Media line rental

The standard line rental option from Virgin Media is its Talk Weekends package, which offers inclusive calls to UK landlines and Virgin Mobile numbers at the weekend. There are four further packages to choose from:

  • Talk More Weekends. Also includes weekend calls to UK mobiles.
  • Talk More Evenings and Weekends. Includes calls to UK landlines and mobiles at the weekend and between 7pm and 7am during the week.
  • Talk More Anytime. Includes calls to UK landlines and mobiles at any time.
  • Talk More International Anytime. Includes calls to UK landlines and mobiles at any time plus landline calls to 30 international destinations.

Virgin Media TV

Virgin Media offers a huge amount of choice when it comes to telly, with four main packages to choose from:

  • Player TV. 70+ basic channels, plus it comes with a 500GB TiVo box, which lets you pause, rewind and record live TV.
  • Mix TV. The 70+ basic channels above, plus a further 80, such as Sky One, Fox and MTV. It also comes with the Virgin TV V6 box, which offers 1TB of storage and lets you record six shows at once.
  • Full House TV. Includes a whopping 230+ channels (with up to 50 in HD), with all the Disney channels and all the BT Sport channels in HD. It comes with the Virgin TV V6 box.
  • VIP. Includes everything in the Full House TV package, plus Sky Sports and Sky Cinema, and comes with the Virgin TV V6 box.

Once you've chosen your basic package it's possible to mix and match, paying extra to add various channel bundles. Options include Sky Sports, BT Sport, Sky Cinema and Sky Entertainment (though this won't include Sky Atlantic).
