TalkTalk broadband, phone and TV - what you get

TalkTalk

It's one of the UK's big four broadband providers, but TalkTalk's reputation took a big hit when it was the victim of a massive data hack in 2015. As it tries to improve its appeal, it regularly has decent promo deals.

What does TalkTalk offer?

TalkTalk has a wide range of packages to choose from. It offers standard-speed and fibre broadband, line rental with a choice of call plans and customisable TV bundles. You can also get mobile phone contracts and Sim-only deals via TalkTalk Mobile, which piggybacks off the O2 network.

How good is TalkTalk's customer service?

Pretty dire. The October 2015 hack which saw the data of 157,000 TalkTalk customers accessed caused massive reputational damage - the Information Commissioner's Office handed TalkTalk a record fine after finding it "should and could have done more to safeguard customer information".

What's more, in our July 2017 poll on broadband customer service it took the wooden spoon among major providers - just 20% of almost 1,000 MoneySavers rated it 'great', and 40% 'poor'.

Ofcom stats also show there's serious room for improvement. It's one of the most complained-about firms for both broadband and home phone, based on complaints per 100,000 customers, though it did a little better on TV.

TalkTalk broadband

TalkTalk has the standard range of broadband packages, all of which come with line rental, including:

  • Fast Broadband. Forget the name, this is basically standard-speed broadband - up to 17Mb, with no monthly usage limit.
  • Faster Fibre Broadband. The basic fibre option, offering speeds of up to 38Mb with no monthly limit.
  • Faster Fibre Broadband up to 76Mb. The superfast fibre option - speeds up to 76Mb, and again no monthly limit.

TalkTalk's also helping to trial UltraFibreOptic broadband offering lightning-quick speeds of 1,000Mb, but this is currently only available to a few customers.

TalkTalk line rental

You'll need line rental to get any of TalkTalk's broadband packages, but if you want to make calls as well, you can choose to add on one or more of the following plans:

  • Unlimited UK calls. Includes unlimited calls to UK mobiles and landlines at any time.
  • International Saver. Gives you a discounted rate on all international calls.
  • International Extra. Includes 1,000 minutes to landlines in more than 50 countries, including the US, India and much of Europe, plus a discounted rate on all other international calls.
  • International Max. Includes 1,000 minutes to landlines AND mobiles in the same set of countries, plus a discounted rate on all other international calls.

TalkTalk TV

TalkTalk's TV offering isn't the most comprehensive, but it is affordable and very flexible. You've two basic options to choose from:

  • TV Box. Comes with 80 Freeview channels, 7-day catch-up and ability to pause and rewind.
  • TV Plus Box. Comes with all of the above, plus six extra Sky entertainment channel, including Sky One and Sky Sports News, and the ability to record up to 180 hours.

You can then customise your TV package by adding certain 'Boosts' which are bundles of channels on a rolling monthly contract. These include:

  • Entertainment boost. Includes 30 premium channels such as Fox, Gold and National Geographic.
  • Kids' boost. Includes 10 channels such as Disney and Nickelodeon.
  • PictureBox boost. Includes 60 movies at a time, with 7 new ones swapped over each week, plus over 50 US boxsets.
  • Sky Sports boost. Includes all Sky Sports channels apart from Sky Sports Mix and News - you won't get HD though.
  • Sky Cinema boost. Includes 11 movie channels.
