BT broadband, phone and TV - what you get

BT

BT is the big boy of broadband and home phone - the UK's biggest provider. It often isn't the cheapest around, unless you're on a special promo deal, but BT broadband customers can also get BT TV, including discounted BT Sport.

What does BT offer?

BT has a broad range of broadband packages, from standard speed to BT Infinity fibre. All require you to take line rental. BT TV is only available to broadband customers - BT's cheaper than rival providers Sky and Virgin Media, but offers a smaller selection of channels. BT has also offered Sim-only mobile deals for a few years now via BT Mobile.

How good is BT's customer service?

Despite its size and name recognition, BT's customer service is pretty disappointing.

In our Feb 2018 poll on broadband customer service it was rated 'great' by just 31% of about 1,600 MoneySavers, and 'poor' by 34%.

Meanwhile, stats from regulator Ofcom show it was the most complained-about major provider for Mobile and Pay TV, based on complaints per 100,000 subscribers.

BT broadband

BT offers one of the widest ranges of broadband packages at different speeds. Standard-speed options, available to 99% of the UK, include:

  • Broadband 15GB. Average speeds of 10Mb, with a tight 15GB monthly usage limit.
  • Broadband Unlimited. Same speed, but with no monthly limit.

Fast fibre options, available to 83% of the UK, include:

  • Superfast Fibre Essential 30GB. Average speeds of 36Mb, with a 30GB monthly usage limit.
  • Superfast Fibre Essential Unlimited. Same speed, but no monthly limit.
  • Superfast Fibre Unlimited. Average speeds of 50Mb, with no monthly limit.
  • Superfast Fibre 2 Unlimited. Average speeds of 67Mb, with no monthly limit.
  • Superfast Fibre Plus. Average speeds of 67Mb, with no monthly limit and enhanced customer service.

All BT's broadband packages give you access to BT Sport via its app and online player, though usually at an additional charge. You also get free access to BT's five million BT Wi-fi hotspots.

BT line rental

BT has three main line rental packages to choose from:

  • Unlimited Weekend Calls. The basic default option - includes free calls to UK landlines at weekends.
  • Unlimited Evening and Weekend Calls. Includes free calls to UK landlines at weekends and between 7pm and 7am during the week.
  • Unlimited Anytime Calls. Includes free calls to UK landlines at any time, and cheaper calls to UK mobiles at any time.

It also offers Line Rental Saver which discounts the monthly cost for line rental if you choose to pay for it upfront.

BT TV

There are three main BT TV packages:

  • TV Starter. Includes about 80 Freeview TV and radio channels, and comes with a basic Youview box that lets you pause and rewind TV - but not record it. You can add BT Sport to this in standard definition (not HD).
  • Entertainment. Includes all the channels in the TV Starter package, plus 19 premium channels such as the Discovery Channel and MTV. It comes with a Youview+ box which lets you record up to 300 hours of TV, and you can add BT Sport in standard or high definition.
  • Max. Includes the basic 80 Freeview channels plus 62 premium channels AND BT Sport. It comes with a Youview+ HD box which lets you record up to 300 hours of TV and watch in HD.

On top of these packages there are a range of channels you can add as an extra bolt-on, including Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, Netflix and more kids' channels.
