Coronavirus & switching broadband

For most, switching is fine as no one needs access to your home – it's sorted remotely. Yet for those switching from cable (eg, Virgin), you'll likely have to wait a little while. This is because most other firms use the BT Openreach network and its engineers are only just starting a phased return of installations after they were put on hold due to social distancing.

When you do switch, you may be down for up to two hours, but in rare cases the outage can be longer if anything goes wrong, so it's worth considering at this time when broadband's so crucial.

EE broadband deals

Best known as a mobile network, EE also offers fixed line broadband. Owned by BT, it offers decent customer service though rarely offers competitive deals.

What does EE offer?

EE has five different broadband packages, from standard speed all the way to up to 'Fibre Max 2' with average speeds of 300Mb, and all come with line rental.

If you want a telly option you can add EE TV, though it is essentially a freeview box, so only gives you access to a range of free channels.

How good is EE's customer service?

It's decent. In our Feb 2019 broadband customer service poll, 54% of 173 MoneySavers said it was 'great', while just 16% said it was 'poor'.

EE broadband

EE has five different broadband packages to choose from, depending on what speed you're after. Each plan allows unlimited downloads and comes with line rental, including its standard speed EE Broadband or its fastest option; EE Fibre Max 2. If you're an EE pay monthly mobile customer, you'll get an extra data allowance added to your mobile plan every month.

EE line rental

Line rental comes with all EE's broadband packages, and the firm currently offers three call add-ons including Anytime calls to UK landlines and mobiles and Anytime UK & International Calls.

EE TV

Only available with EE broadband, EE TV comes with more than 70 freeview channels, including 11 in HD. You can also use it to access pay TV options such as Sky Sports if you pay extra, and its 1TB box allows you to record up to 600 hours of telly.

Our top need-to-knows

1

Who we do and don't compare

This tool looks at 16 of the biggest providers, including the giants of BT, Sky and Virgin. Plus special deals we've found or blagged that we think are top picks. Yet there are also many small providers we can't list - which occasionally have cheap deals - so it's always worth checking direct with any local provider you know of. Let us know if you find a top deal we've missed and see which providers this tool covers.

2

Switching can save you £100s

Many get a cheap promo deal for broadband, line rent and/or TV, and stick with it when it ends, usually paying £100s/year more than they started with. Don't let it be you - compare now and see if you could save

3

Fast advertised speeds don't mean faster broadband

Providers only have to advertise the average speed received by at least 50% of customers between 8pm and 10pm. Your actual speed can depend on a host of factors - see the full checklist of tips in Broadband Speed Boosting.

4

Consider your need for speed

If it's just you and the dog, you're likely to be fine with standard speeds averaging around 11Mb. If you share a house, or you use the web for movie downloads, streaming or gaming, you may want to opt for faster speeds in excess of 30Mb.

5

Beware of mid-contract switching costs

Usually you'll pay for the rest of the contract plus termination fees. If your provider increases prices mid-contract and didn't warn you before you signed up, you can switch penalty-free within 30 days of notification of the price hike.
